on a hiding to nothing
【习语注释】
hiding是hide的动名词，常用于体育赛事中，喻指较弱的乙方“被痛打或一败涂地”；nothing在这里主要是指体育赛事中，较强的乙方，即便赢了比赛也得不到什么荣誉或奖励；其中的to，是指双方的比赛成绩对比。整个习语因此用来比喻毫无成功的机会或希望。
【习语运用】
The Government is on a hiding to nothing in these elections.
本届政府在这些选举中毫无希望。
The Indian footballers were on a hiding to nothing. They could not win.
印度球员丝毫没有成功的机会，他们不能赢。
If you think the bank will lend you yet more money,you’re on a hiding to nothing. 如果你以为银行还会借给你钱，那你是毫无成功的希望的。
【闲话习语】
该习语源于二十世纪早期的赛马比赛中的术语，比较早的有关习语的书面使用记录来源于作家Arthur Binstead的小说Mop Fair（1905），其中有这么一句话：“They will, like the man who was on a hiding to nothing the first time Tom Sayers saw him, ‘take it lying down’.” 到了二十世纪七十年代，《周日时报》（The Sunday Times）中也有使用记录：“The Indian batsmen were on a hiding to nothing. They could not win.”
